Job Summary
The Data Management Intern will provide day-to-day support to Action Against Hunger’s data management, reporting, and digital information systems. The intern will assist with data capture, data cleaning, routine data quality checks, dashboard updates, user support, documentation, and preparation of reports for MEAL and program teams.
The role will provide practical exposure to DHIS2 operations, Excel/Google Sheets, mobile data collection tools, Power BI dashboards, and basic data interoperability workflows. Working under the supervision of the DHIS2 Database Manager, the intern will support timely, accurate, and reliable data processes for decision-making across Kenya and the Nairobi hub.
This position is designed as a learning and support role, helping the intern build practical skills in data management, digital systems, reporting, and program data quality.

Purpose To support smooth and reliable data operations by assisting with routine system updates, data cleaning, data quality checks, dashboard refreshes, documentation, training coordination, and basic automation tasks under the guidance of the Data Manager. The role helps ensure that MEAL and program teams have access to accurate, timely, and well-organized data for reporting and decision-making. |

Engagement The Data Management Intern will work closely with the DHIS2 Database Manager, MEAL teams, program staff, and country focal points. The intern will support communication with users, assist during trainings and onboarding sessions, contribute to documentation, and participate in knowledge-sharing activities across the Nairobi hub and Kenya bases. |

Delivery The intern is expected to work proactively, learn quickly, follow guidance, and deliver assigned tasks on time. The role requires attention to detail, willingness to learn, and the ability to support routine data tasks in a dynamic environment with deadlines linked to donor reporting, program monitoring, and country support needs. |
Essential Job Duties
A. Data Systems Configuration & Metadata Support
Under the guidance of the DHIS2 Database Manager, the intern will:
- Assist in making approved basic configuration updates in DHIS2 and other data systems, such as data elements, indicators, datasets, forms, option sets, and user access settings.
- Support the maintenance of metadata consistency across systems.
- Help update data dictionaries, indicator reference sheets, and configuration trackers.
- Maintain simple change logs for system updates and metadata changes.
- Support testing of new system features, forms, dashboards, and updates before they are released to users.
- Report configuration issues, errors, or inconsistencies to the Data Manager for review.
B. Data Operations, Dashboards & Reporting Support
The intern will:
- Support routine data cleaning, validation, and preparation of datasets for MEAL and program reporting.
- Run basic data quality checks to identify missing values, duplicates, outliers, inconsistencies, and reporting gaps.
- Assist in following up on common data errors with country focal points or program teams.
- Support the preparation and refresh of standard dashboards and reports in DHIS2, Power BI, Excel, and Google Sheets.
- Assist with routine data exports for monthly, quarterly, and donor reporting.
- Help organize datasets and reporting templates for easy access and future use.
- Escalate complex data issues or system errors to the Data Manager.
C. Quality Assurance & System Testing
The intern will:
- Assist in testing DHIS2 forms, dashboards, reports, and other digital tools before deployment.
- Support User Acceptance Testing by following test scripts and documenting results.
- Log issues, bugs, and user feedback in an organized tracker.
- Help verify whether reported issues have been resolved after fixes are applied.
- Support implementation of basic validation checks to improve data completeness, consistency, and accuracy.
- Follow data protection, confidentiality, and data security protocols when handling program data.
D. User Support, Training & Documentation
The intern will:
- Provide basic first-level support to users, including how-to guidance, login assistance, account setup support, and simple troubleshooting.
- Assist in receiving, documenting, and tracking user support requests.
- Escalate technical or complex support issues to the Data Manager.
- Support the preparation of user guides, quick-reference materials, FAQs, and training slides.
- Help organize and coordinate training sessions for MEAL and program teams.
- Assist during trainings by supporting attendance tracking, participant follow-up, and practical exercises.
- Maintain a simple knowledge base of frequently asked questions, known issues, and common solutions.
E. Integration, Automation & Scripting Support
Under close supervision, the intern will:
- Assist in running approved data import and export processes under close supervision.
- Support monitoring of scheduled data tasks such as exports, uploads, or basic ETL workflows.
- Help check whether automated jobs have completed successfully.
- Support basic data extraction, cleaning, and transformation using Excel, Google Sheets, SQL, or approved scripts.
- Document errors from scripts or automated tasks and escalate them to the Data Manager.
- Learn and gradually support simple scripting or automation tasks where appropriate.
F. Learning, Coordination & Continuous Improvement
The intern will:
- Participate in MEAL, data, and program meetings as required.
- Support continuous improvement of data tools, workflows, and reporting templates.
- Contribute ideas for improving data quality, reporting efficiency, and user experience.
- Support surge data needs during key reporting periods, assessments, field responses, or donor reporting deadlines.
- Carry out other related duties assigned by the Data Manager.
Minimum Requirements
- Diploma, bachelor’s degree in progress, or recent graduate in Information Systems, Statistics, Computer Science, Public Health, Monitoring and Evaluation, Data Science, or a related field.
- Basic working knowledge of Excel or Google Sheets; exposure to DHIS2, Power BI, Kobo/ODK, SQL, or data visualization tools is an added advantage.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn data quality, reporting, and digital systems workflows.
- Good communication skills and ability to support users patiently and professionally.
